Strengthening Indonesia’s Future Leaders: Sukanto Tanoto’s TELADAN Education Programme

Amid intensifying labour market competition and rapid global change, university graduates are increasingly required to go beyond academic excellence. Strong non-technical or soft skills such as leadership, adaptability, and integrity, have become essential for long-term career success.

Responding to this challenge, Tanoto Foundation, a philanthropic organisation founded by Sukanto Tanoto, Chairman of Royal Golden Eagle (RGE), and his wife Tinah Bingei Tanoto, continues to support the Indonesian government’s efforts to strengthen leadership and non-technical skills among the nation’s young generation. Through its TELADAN Programme, Tanoto Foundation provides not only financial assistance but also structured soft skills and leadership development to help students become future-ready leaders.

A New Generation of Scholars

In January 2026, Tanoto Foundation officially inaugurated 176 new Tanoto Scholars from the 2026 cohort. These scholars represent ten partner universities across Indonesia: Universitas Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Diponegoro, IPB University, Universitas Riau, Universitas Sumatra Utara, Universitas Hasanuddin, and Universitas Mulawarman.

Over the course of seven semesters, Tanoto Scholars are developed into future leaders of Indonesia through a comprehensive curriculum built around nine core leadership characteristics: self-awareness, a driven mindset, innovation, continuous learning, care for others, empowering others, grit, integrity, and an entrepreneurial spirit. This holistic approach reflects the long-term vision of Chairman Sukanto Tanoto and RGE in building human capital that can drive sustainable development.

Creating Equal Opportunities through Education

Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno, who delivered an inspirational address at the inauguration ceremony, expressed his appreciation for Tanoto Foundation’s commitment to creating equal opportunities through education.

“This scholarship is a trust from someone who believes that education can change lives, and even alter the course of a nation. One day, when you stand at a pivotal moment in your life, remember that you once received an opportunity greater than others. Be a role model through your values and the positive impact you bring to your community,” said Rano Karno.

The TELADAN Programme is part of Tanoto Foundation’s long-term commitment to preparing Indonesia’s future leaders who are not only academically capable but also strong in character. Through initiatives like TELADAN, Tanoto Foundation, supported by the values of Chairman Sukanto Tanoto, continues to play a strategic role in shaping Indonesia’s next generation of leaders.
